Ice FishingEdit

Ice fishing is a sport that is almost as old as humanity itself. It can be traced back to the days when people had to search for food where ever they could just to stay alive. One of the places that they found that food was under frozen lakes and ponds.

There are several species of fish that are active and are sought after by ice anglers. These species are walleye, northern pike, perch, bluegills, crappies, bass, trout, salmon, pickerel, and smelt.

Because ice fishing requires solid ice it is only done in northern climates such as the Northern States in America, Canada during the winter, and northern European countries such as Norway and Finland.

Ice Fishing GearEdit

Because ice fishing is done in below freezing temparatures you are going to need specalized gear. One of the most important things that you are going to need is proper thermal clothing. Warm boots, gloves, parkas, pants, and an extra change of dry clothes are a must if you are going to be spending any serious time on the ice.

Other than warm clothes you are also going to need some thing to drill, cut or smash a hole in the ice. If the ice is really thick, or just kind of thick, then you are going to need an auger. I suggest that if you are bringing a vehicle with you, you should get a gas powered auger. That is because you can just toss it into or on top of your vehicle. You are also going to need something to scoop the ice out of your hole. (The ice hole).

Ice fishing requires a specalized type of rod. there or short ones that you can buy or there is a nifty invention called a tip up. The tip up is a set and forget kind of tool. It will change position and let you know when you have a bite.

There are some more luxurious types of ice fishing equipment that you will want to bring with you if you are fortunate enought to afford it. Those wonderful devices are the snowmobile, atv, or a fully appointed, luxury, ice fishing shack. (TV is optional).

Some thing else that you are going to want to think about is an ice fihsing sled. It can be used to haul whatever you want and on the plus side it is a really great time if you are riding it down hill.
